Having problems with your 2005 Mazda 3 ?

Engine light went on this morning and heating system did not function. are they related problems

Sounds like the antifreeze in the radiator was/is weak and allowed it to freeze. It MUST be December.
\015\012DO NOT DRIVE IT until you've thawed it out.
\015\012The way to do that is start the engine watch the temp guage. It will begin to over heat. BEFORE it over heats to much, shut it off and wait. Slowly this will thaw the water in the system.
\015\012Once thawed (be patient) drain and refill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
