Having problems with your 2003 Lincoln Navigator ?

Lincoln dealership has told me I have a cracked headgasket and a manifold problem which is allowing air in. The cost for Headgasket $2600 and $600 for Manifold. Is this a problem an independent Mechanic could tackle? Do the cost of repairs sound reasonable?

The price is a bit high.

The head gasket is not an expensive part , what is expensive is the labor to replace it.

An OEM head gasket will cost less than $100 (about $70/$80). The full kit original from manufacturer will cost about $250.

The mainfold is also not too expensive. The part is very easy to replace.

What is usually replaced is not the mainfold, but the mainfold gasket, that may allow air in. Here the part: Manifold Gasket - Lower\015\012\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011\011.

Even if replacing the head gasket is expensive , I think that over $2000 Labor to replace an head gasket is still a bit high, even considering the type of vehicle.

Head gasket and mainfold replacement may be done by a different authorized mechanic for a lower fee.

Here head gasket, I have chosen the 8 cyl as an example, other engines will mount a different head gasket.

I am sure that many good mechanics may do the job for an amount between $1500 and $2000.

To find less than that you need to get a cheap mechanic and install an OEM universal head gasket. In that case the complete job may even go down to less than $1000.

I think that the quote you got from the dealer is a bit high, but it is still a regular dealer quote for this kind of work.

An authorized dealer charging a bit more than a third party garage is normal.
