Having problems with your 1998 Toyota 4Runner ?

Starter won't disengage

\015 1998 Toyota 4Runner-- my husband tried to start it (this has been somewhat of an issue lately-- usually "clicks" a few time, then finally starts up) and the starter came ON and wouldn't disengage- even with the key out. He disconnected the cables to the battery. What can we do-- we need to at LEAST make it stop long enough to drive it to the shop! Any help appreciated! (Not even sure WHERE it (the starter) is located....)\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 19-03-2018

I have disconnected battery. Then played with ignition key. After that I connected battery, started the car and drove to shop. But you can fix starter yourself. Pull it out and replace contact brushes and disc inside the starter's solenoid, which is on the side of starter. You can find details about this in the net.
You have a defective start, no 2 ways about it, and it may be hung up, which means there is no way that you will be able to start it or to disengage the starter. It will have to be towed, and as it is, the tow company can tow it.
