1998 Lincoln Mark VIII sometimes stalls when idling in gear

\015 I own a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII with 141K miles. The car had a tune up at 100K and had been running okay until a few weeks ago. After installing a new battery to replace a 7-year old one, I drove the car without incident for a few days. Then, one day after driving about 10 miles to the local store, the car stalled at a stoplight, but fired right back up only to stall again. It stalled two more times before I could finally park it. Then it drove fine on the way home.\012\012Sometimes the car will not stall but the idle will go lower than it should and feel like it is idling rough. It only seems to stall in gear though as the idle is lower than when it is in Park. Also, the car does not stall when the engine is cold, only after it has warmed up. Fearing bad gas, I put in a can of IsoHeet and ran it through and filled the tank with 91 octane. It still stalled after that.\012\012The car did have a bad EGR valve replaced right after the tune-up at 102K miles and the serpentine belt replaced last year. Other than that, I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles, put in a can of fuel system cleaner every so often and have never had a problem with it. But that also means I have never had to replace any sensors, pumps or other engine parts that might be faulty. \012\012Any idea what might be causing this? Thanks for your time.\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 19-03-2018

Answers :

Do you have a "Check Engine" light?

Check the coils in each cylinder. At 140k the valve cover gaskets tend to break and oil will fill the coils causing misfires and stalling.
