Having problems with your 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster ?
1997 bmw z3 - battery compartment filled with water and car wouldn't even turn much less start. Cleaned out etc. and replaced battery and now can get the lights but it won't turn over to start. Any ideas? Thanks!
From your description of the issue, I would troubleshoot by checking all connections. From what you have said, there was water involved, and cleaning...possibly the wet area and the moisture has aided in creating a short or a corroded connection..that is where I would start, simply because of events that lead up to the car not turning over. Ususally cleaning the battery area involves washing down some acid...this can corrode connections...check grounds. It sounds like your switch is working properly, I am assuming that when you switch it on, your accessories work. If this is the case, you should start your troubleshooting under the hood. Concentrate on the area where the moisture was and branch out from there. It is possible to have a good enough battery connection to get lights but not good enough to actuate the starter. Try this, switch on the lights then have a helper turn the switch to start, if the lights do not dim, you do not have power going to the starter. If this is the case, you can go to the starter connections and work backwards to the battery, paying attention to the starter selenoid and the ground.connections. Your problem will prove to be a simple one...be patient and check these connections. Also check the starter relay and fuse. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!
If the bat compartment filled with water then so did other things...I would think your motor has injested some water and has hydro lock (cylinders full of water)...you need to take it to the shop to confirm how much damage has been caused. You can also remove all the spark plugs then try cranking the motor which should spit the water out if in the cylinders (replace them too) and you may have other electrical components that have gotten wet and are malfuctioning (eventhe starter)
