While this is kinda of tricky but you should like your in it so hears what i know.
To set the timing your looking at two marks, these marks can be defined as a dot an arrow a hash,...you have 1 on the crankshaft gear and the camshaft gear.
Now there should also be a mark on the engine itself again a arrow a hash a dot some marking. so what you want to do is line up defined mark on the toothed wheel with the defined mark on the defined engine mark. this applies to both gears. they must line up. Here's where it gets tricky. You need to be on the compression stroke for cylinder #1. you can buy this at a local auto store. So put everything together....
When you remove the spark plug and put the compression tester in cylinder 1...set your camshaft on the defined marks lining them up then slowly turn your crankshaft, what you looking for is pressure to build in cylinder 1 if nothing develops, take the camshaft and rotate it on full rotation lining the marks again and turn the crankshaft looking for pressure. once you get it make sure you line up your marks and set the belt on good luck hope i helped
