You'll need to buy replacement hatch struts and replace them. You can find these at auto parts stores, or by searching on the internet.
\015\012They come off by carefully twisting the body of the strut to the side until it comes loose (if they are the type that don't have a nut holding them in place). Do this on both ends, and I would suggest using a pair of pliers wrapped in an old T-shirt or duct tape that will keep from damaging them. Use the old ones for practice, and that way you won't damage the new ones when you put them in.
\015\012You can probably use a broomstick to hold the hatch open while you do this. Wrap the ends in duct tape to keep it in place (sounds crazy but it works LOL).
The support or "Strut" has worn out. These are fairly easy to replace and generally are inexpensive. Volkswagen Hatch Struts are manufactured in various dimensions; it's \015\012good to learn its length when the hatch is entirely up prior to buying a\015\012 new strut. A strut must be switched out as it wears out.
The replacement struts can usually be purchased at any auto parts store (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, Kragen, etc.) or the dealership.
Try Pep Boys as they will usually help you install the new strut for no charge. The dealerships usually charge to do the install.

Hope this answers your question.
