Loss of power from engine to wheels

\015 The engine on my car works fine, Or at least I can hear the engine rev and such. But there is very little power going to the wheels. Like the car goes about as fast as I can push it. It feels to me like driving manual and pressing the gas while not fully releasing the clutch like only getting 1% of the power i should be. So is there some sort of auto clutch? When I was driving it trying to get back home this one part started smoking. it's located toward the back right side of the engine area (that's under the hood, if you are standing at the front bumper looking back at the car). Also when i change from reverse to drive, I do not feel the gears hitting or anything (that bang or jolt that comes from switching)Thanks a lot.\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 19-03-2018

\015\012check the automatic transmission fluid level, I believe the dipstics are colored yellow or red under the hood of 90s fords and theyre kind of hidden. You check the level by starting the car and letting it warm up, leave in park, set the parking brake, pull the dipstick out wipe it off with a rag, put it back in and pull it back out, hafta look closely on the end of the dipstick for the level. It should be in between the the low and high marks of the dipstick, refill the fluid with automatic type mercon fluid or whatever the dipstick says on it, to refill the fluid-it goes right in the dipstick hole with a specialty funnel with an extremely small end on it, fill it a half quart at a time checking with dipstick in between pours untill you reach the top mark. while you have the dipstick there smell the used fluid, if it smells burnt kinda like sulphur then you have transmission trouble, take it up for an estimate. I dont recommend driving it anymore untill you have topped off the fluid and have it looked at. putting a piece of cardboard under the engine compartment on the ground will give you a general area of where the leak is overnight.
