    \015\012
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. \015\012

\015\012

\015\012\015\012CAUTION\015\012When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old. \015\012

\015\012\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the elbow and then position it out of the way.
  2. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Remove the right side engine under cover.
  4. \015\012 \015\012
  5. Loosen the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor and then remove the drive belts.
  6. \015\012 \015\012
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.
  8. \015\012 \015\012
  9. Matchmark the crank angle sensor to the upper front cover and the remove it. Carefully position it out of the way.
  10. \015\012 \015\012
  11. Position a floor jack under the engine and raise it just enough to support the engine.
  12. \015\012 \015\012
  13. Remove the upper engine mount bracket at the right side of the upper front cover.
  14. \015\012 \015\012
  15. Remove the upper front cover.
  16. \015\012 \015\012
  17. Align the timing marks on the camshaft pulley sprockets and then remove the crankshaft pulley.
  18. \015\012

\015\012The crankshaft pulley may be reached by removing the side cover from inside the right-hand wheel opening.
\015\012\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Remove the lower front cover.
  2. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut to slacken the timing belt and then slide off the belt.
  4. \015\012

\015\012To install:
\015\012Do not bend or twist the timing belt. NEVER rotate the crankshaft and camshaft separately with the timing belt removed. Be sure the timing belt is free of any oil, water or debris.
\015\012\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket with the sprocket plates.
  2. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Before installing the timing belt, ensure that the No. 1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke (all sprocket timing marks will be in alignment with the marks on the case).
  4. \015\012

\015\012When the timing belt is on and in position, there should be 39 cogs between the timing mark on each of the camshaft sprocket and 48 cogs between the mark on the right camshaft sprocket and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket.
\015\012\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley nut.
  2. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt and then rotate the engine two complete revolutions.
  4. \015\012

\015\012Fabricate and install a suitable 25mm thick spacer between the end of the crankshaft and the head of the crankshaft pulley bolt to prevent bolt damage.
\015\012\015\012
    \015\012
  1. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt to 16-22 ft. lbs. (21-30 Nm).
  2. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Install the upper and lower front covers.
  4. \015\012 \015\012
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley with its washer and tighten it to 105-112 ft. lbs. (143-152 Nm).
  6. \015\012 \015\012
  7. Install the engine mount bracket.
  8. \015\012 \015\012
  9. Install the water pump pulley. Install the crank angle sensor so that the matchmarks made previously line up and tighten the bolts to 61-70 inch lbs. (7-9 Nm).
  10. \015\012 \015\012
  11. Install all drive belts and adjust.
  12. \015\012 \015\012
  13. Install the right side engine under cover.
  14. \015\012 \015\012
  15. Reconnect the radiator hose and refill the radiator.
  16. \015\012 \015\012
  17. Connect the battery cable and start the engine. Check engine timing and for any leaks. Road test.
