Not extremely hard just need the right tools for it and a manual.
This is a pretty involved job. You will need some specialized tools also.
\015\012It involves removing the rear axles.
\015\012The bearings and seals are at the end of the axle housing.
\015\012On a DIY scale of 1 - 10 (with 10 as the hardest) it's about a 6 if you are comfortable doing major automotive work.

The passenger side rear wheel on my daughters '04 Focus has developed a whir. A sharp turn to the left unloads the right wheel and the whirring stops. Rotated the tires to eliminate a wheel and/or tire issue. A manual rotation of the wheel feels like an incremental stutter, which is different from the drivers side. I am assuming a wheel bearing. I can turn a wrench and have tools. My question is, does the replacement of the rear wheel bearing require special tools? Any assistance is greatly ap

I have a 2006 S40 Volvo that has just clicked over on 100,000 miles. It had never been to anyone other than the dealer for service but since it was out of warranty I took it to a local business that I am familiar with. They replaced a front wheel bearing but that didn't fix the problem and now they think it may be the rear wheel bearing on that same side but they have informed me that they can't get a rear wheel bearing because it is a dealer item? The noise is loudest at about 40-50 mph.

The rear of my Mazda 3 was making noise, so I narrowed the problem to the rear wheel bearings. After removing my Mazda's rear bearing hub assembly, I tried to carefully remove the plastic cover to expose the bearings. In the end the cover broke apart instead of pulling out. I went ahead and added more grease to the bearings, which fixed the noise, but for now I have used silicone to keep the cover in place.
