How to remove shifter from 87 ford f150 - F-150 Ford Cars & Trucks

The first thing you have to do, is to remove the chrome ring around the shifter. The rubber boot and chrome ring will pull up to the shifter knob to get it out of your way. There are 4 bolts on the top of the transmission that you should be able to to get through the hole in the floor. Then the shifter will come out. Make sure that the shifter is in neutral. It will be very hard to find neutral once you remove the 4 bolts.
Start in the truck under the dash. Pull the connector off the ball where it is attached to the steering column. Now for the hard part! That plastic connecter actually just slips onto the metal bracket holding it. There is a small tab on the backside with a plastic pin that sits in the bracket to lock it in place. Using a small flathead (stubby) you can pry that tab back, then using a longer flathead, just push that plastic piece upward, and it will slide right off the metal bracket.

Now comes the contorionist bit. There is a wiring harness running right behind the cable in that area, so it is going to take a little work wiggling it out. The cable loops down and should be tie wrapped or the like at another harness further down somewhere by the brake pedal.

You might benefit from freeing it from the floor at this point for a little more play. Pull back the carpeting under the gas pedal, it goes through a rubber grommet that just pops out (dont worry about salvaging it as the new cable comes with this grommet attached already).

Once the cable is free frim under the dash, you are home free. Push the whole thing through the hole under the gas pedal, get under the truck,
and all you have to do now is pop the connector of the ball on the tranny, and then remove the adjusting clip from the bracket on the tranny. To do that, just squeeze the two tabs on the back side and push it towards the front, and its out!

Putting the new one back in is just the reverse, (i started at the dash since it was much more difficult!)

To adjust it once it is in, all you do is have the tranny in park, pull the clip on the adjuster down and slide it back and forth until all is lined up
