Having problems with your Dodge Intrepid ?

My engine light has been on for about two weeks now. I diagnosed it as a P0172 problem. I found that this means that one side of my engine is running too rich on the fuel to air ratio. Now that I know, the problem, I'm not sure how to fix it. Can you give me some help?

Answers :

First check that air filter is not excessively dirty.

The fuel injectors on that side may be leaking. You can check this by putting a fuel pressure gauge on the injector fuel rail and turning on the fuel pump for a few seconds to pressurize it. Then turn the fuel pump off and watch the pressure reading. If it slowly bleeds down, one of the injectors is probably leaking.

A restricted exhaust on that side may be the problem.

A "lazy" oxygen sensor on that bank may be switching so slowly that it is throwing off computer fuel mixture calculations.

Some unmetered air has entered the intake stream or into the exhaust pipe on that side through a crack or exhaust manifold gasket leak ahead of the O2 sensor. This extra air contains oxygen that the O2 sensor sees as a lean condition and the computer then schedules more fuel. After some time and comparing with the other bank, the computer sets a rich code.
