Here is the way to replace your rear shocks - Please note people have been seriously injured and even killed attempting this at home. That said here are the logistics.

First jack up and secure the car. You will need to use the jack during this process so [ a roller type jack] jack up the car and secure it with JACK STANDS.

2 - You will need to remove the wheel [s] and set it [them] aside
3 - Now you will need to remove the brake assembly. I recommend using small bungy cords and set and hang the brake assembly aside.
4 - look into the trunk and locate the top of the assembly - remove the cover and find the top bolts that secure the top to the car - set aside the socket to fit this for later use. These will sometimes be hard to find the first time.
5 - You will need to rent or buy the SPRING C0MPRESSOR - THIS IS A MUST., This is also where it can kill you if you're not careful and harm you even if you are. There are curved pieces on this unit that are made to go over the edge of the coil springs.

One spring on each shock - the removal of this is as ONE PIECE and is dangerous.

6- attach the SPRING COMPRESSOR ON THE SPRING and with some pressure on the BOTTOM of the unit or rear end assembly - tighten the bolts on the spring compressor. SEE BELOW :
7-After applying the spring compressors [ two for each spring - one spring at a time] tighten the compressors. You can save some tightening if you jack up the spring assembly and then apply the compressors while the jack compresses the springs for you.
8- loosen and remove the bottom two large bolts on the shock as you see below.

9- now - go to the top inside the car and remove the three bolts that hold the entire assembly to the car. At this point again - NO PRESSURE can be on the Shock assembly - - these are called STRUTS - so the terminology may differ a little if you buy a manual to assist.

You should now be holding the old unit in your hand.

remove the old one and replace it.

Now just reverse the procedure.

Please remember to take pictures - they will prove invaluable on a project like this.

Best of luck on this and please consider letting a professional install these as this is very dangerous as a procedure.

Anyway - should you decide to do it yourself I hope this does it for you.

Best of it.

Does a left-rear shock absorber no longer attached to the unibody, with no attachment hardware being left up top that I can see signal a prohibitively expensive repair - or did the mounting hardware which normally holds the top of the shock to the car simply rust away and fall off, with replacement of both the mounting hardware and shock being fairly straightforward?
