Having problems with your 2006 Nissan Maxima ?

My gas hand has flipped around to bottom of fuel gauge and is hitting peg on bottom. How can i get it back around to correct position. The car died as the gauge was coming up to full and needle continued on over top and fell down. Trys to work but is hitting bottom side of peg at empty mark.
