Having problems with your 2005 Mercury Montego ?

2005 Mercury Montego. When accelerating from about 30 mph or higher, engine fills like it temporarily shifts into neutral, rpm's shoot way up, no power, then a couple of very loud bangs somewhere from under the hood, before getting back into gear. Has made for some very dangerous situations when getting on the highway. Happens very sporadically and only with warmer outside temperatures, not once during the winter. Any ideas? Talked with a Ford mechanic and said he had never heard of any similar

I can't believe the mechanic has said he has never heard of this situation. The friction bands in your tranny sound like they are shot. Pull you tranny dipstick when your car is hot and smell the fluid. It should not smell burnt. You will know what I mean if you smell burnt fluid, it is unmistakable. If it smells burnt then I think you need to have your tranny rebuilt or replaced.

\015\012You can try having your tranny filter changed and changing the fluid, but I doubt this will help. Anytime you get a loud bang from your tranny and it drops out of gear it isn't a good sign for the life of your tranny. I would take your car to a qualified transmission specialist. I would also stay away from the other mechanic who had never heard of this issue before!

\015\012The reason why the vehicle may only being doing it in the summer is because the friction bands will be hotter during the summer months adn this may be contributing to their failure. If you tow with the vehicle this may be a contributing factor.

\015\012You can try a transmission cooler, that might get you another fews months of service out of the vehicle because it will keep the tranny fluid cooler and possibly simulate colder external temps.
This isnt a sosution but I'm experiencing the same problem. Acording to a simple google search, a is a lot of other 2005 Mercury Montego owners are having the same problem. Ive taken it to two different shops and after a test drive agreed that it SHOULD NOT do this. The guys down at the Ford dealership hooked it up to the computer and ran a diagnistics test and said it was good and implied that i was crazy.
\015\012Ford knows about this problem but for some reason is ignoring this problem. The problem is the CVT transmission that is experimental with Ford and we're just they're guinie pigs.
