I have a 1995 Suzuki sidekick 16 valve 1.6 engine, that I am going to replace head gasket. I have removed everything except the timing belt, distributor, and head. My question is why is it that in the Haynes Manual it states that on the 16 valve engines you have to remove the camshaft and intake rocker arms. Is this correct? and why does the distributor need to come off also? both of these parts are attached to the Engine Head. I would assume that just by removing the head bolts the whole

Need to verify the timing marks on my honda civic engine i've lined them up like it shows but the engine still turns over like it has no compression after timing the belt the cam gear has the 3 lines on it to line up the middle line with the pointer and the outside 2 line with the valve cover surface of the head. i suspect possible valve damage but was told this engine would not suffer that fate if the engine jumped timing?

This engine is an interference will bent valve's, if the timing belt broke you have bent valve's as far as how you set the camshaft gear you did it right, the cylinder head will have to be remove to repair and replace bent valve's. ... 1996 Honda Civic

I have 2006 Dodge Stratus 4 cycl. It died on me while i was driving and wouldn't start back up. i had a mechanic check it out and he said it was the timing belt but he couldn't tell me for sure if replacing the timing belt would fix the problem or if i would need a new motor. would it be woth it to fix it or to get get a new car(that i can't afford)???? how much wouldthis cost??? the mechanic mentioned changing the timing belt, head job, or new motor...

The problem is that it depends on the mileage and the condition of the car and if it was kept up, the timing belt is what keeps the top and bottom of the motor in time, when the belt breaks the pistons come up and hit and bend the valves because the ... Dodge Stratus

Replaced head on 1990 740 wagon, volvo, 4 cyl, single OHC, non turbo, interference engine. Need help with timing belt adjustments prior to firing up engine. Have #1 and #4 cyl at TDC with both sets of valves closed. My car, 1994 Mazda 626 4cyl,would not pass emission testing. The shop said I had no compression in one cylinder. I was told I needed a valve job. As a part of that, I went ahead and had a new head gasket set. The shop has since replaced all the machined parts and the car won't start. I don't know much about car repair, but my theory is that it may be related to the timing belt and all the shop did was remove the parts that I mentioned above, sent the parts to the machine shop, got the parts ba

Ford Focus - 12 years old, broke timing belt. The garage is saying I need a complete new cylinder head. I suspected it was the timing belt and expected several bent valves at worst. My question is simply "is there any way a broken timing belt could possibly result in damage requiring the cylinder head replacement"

Hi, I have a 2004 chevy Aveo with a 1.6 liter engine, have timed the crank and cams per timing marks but the pistons are clipping the valves. Have verified the marks are lined up, I need some exact timing references maybe the cam timing by their timing in degrees etc. any help would be greatly appreciated. Also the head has been rebuilt by a reputable machine shop, head has new valves. Thanks Bill......

Sounds like you turned it over with starter motor instead of by a rachet for the first 360? to make sure that the valves cleared ,another reason could be the valve seats were not lowered when the head was skimmed ,have you used the correct to lock ca ... Chevrolet Aveo

I have a Renault Megane 1.4 2000 model the timing belt has not snapped but the teeth on the belt have broken away which in turn will not allow the timing belt to rotate. Would this be just as bad as the belt actually snapping and will there be damage to the valves and pistons?

Yes it is as bad as the belt snapping, if your lucky there will be cutaways in the pistons so the valves may not have touched, its a bit tricky to check until you replace the belt and can check valve clearances and cylnder compressions, \015\01 ... 1986 Renault Sport

1984 928 began running very rough & lost all power. Shop indicates 0 compression on 4 cylinders and that likely cause is slipped timing belt and damage to valves on one side. I thought 1984 engine had ''non-interference valve design'' and that valve damage would not result from slipped timing belt. I don't want to spend $4,000 on a repair I don't need. Does the diagnosis make sense?

Depending upon the rpm that the engine was turning at, I have seen "non interference" engines bend valves on a timing belt or chain failure. if you have 0 compression on that bank, it will need to be torn down to find out why. BUT I would do a ... 1984 Porsche 928

Is it possible for. Lifter to bend valves in stead of wrong valve timing on a Renault Clio 3 ? Took car for its 90 000km service and cam belt with pulleys and water pump replacement and all went wrong. The machanic said it was not his fault timing was correct. It bent valves because of lifter pulling scew and collapsing. What I head and little knowlage I have of cars is inpossible. 1st time taking car back it didn't have power. And machanic said its fine only a lifter noise all he can find. 2nd

You are right to be suspicious of the answer that you got, the only way for valves to get "bent" is for them to come into contact with the piston(s).the lifters are run by the cam, which is run by the timing belt, (which was just "replaced" b ... 2007 Renault Clio 1.6ESP

I have a 2004 Acura MDX now at 96,000 and the timing belt broke. Anyone hear of such a thing? I replaced the original at 62K and I am now at 96K and while I was driving the timing belt broke. They told me that they would have to replace the timing belt and then called back to tell me that there is damage to the valves and possible damage to your cylinder head and pistons.
