I see 2 things to test and not knowing what sound it makes, I make these recommendations.

First, when you open the gascap, your sealed system is no longer sealed. This means the vacuum must be restored to reseal the system. You have a venting system which can be checked with a smoke test machine.

This usually makes a Code or lights a check-engine light, but I imagine since the car is not running but only cranking the light may not go on. The noise you hear may be valving closing to create a vacuum. But since this is interferring with the starting, the integrity of the system should be checked.

The fuelpump and fuelpump pressure regulator should be checked. Your fuel should not leave the engine high and dry for several reasons. The system should maintain line pressure even overnight. The fuelpump should be capable of repressurizng the system within seconds, so hard starts should not occur from this. Loss of the vacuum seal on the gascap should not cause the fuel to drain from the lines and the pressure regulator should provide a one-way valve to prevent loss of pressure.

I work primarily on Ford products and unless GM has some sort of prevention system for starting with no fuel, there should be no reason to have these problems.

I would like to know how this ends up when you find out.
