I didn't replace my turbo when they said and eventually the turbo did fail. Since the turbo is oil cooled all the oil from the engine burned through the broken seals of my turbo and out through the catalytic converter causing it to clog. My turbo cost $1100CDN Labor was $800. And a new catalytic was $900 + tax. Oh for got to mention the burning oil through the exhaust burned out two sensors, O2 and MAF so add another $400 for that and labor to install it.

If the turbo is truly failing, then it could put metal pieces through the engine if it broke apart. Usually when a turbo fails, it's the bearings wearing out, and the turbo starts making a "dentist's drill" sound when the car accelerates. $1500 sounds pretty steep but if it's at a dealership, I can see where it would cost that much. A better bet is an independent European car specialist - usually they'll cost significantly less. Also, you can source a turbo on your own (you'd be looking for a K03s turbo) and give it to the mechanic to install, to save even more.
