2002 egr valve problems

\015 Something is going on with the egr valve in my mazda 2002 tribute. \015\012Something seems to be creating pressure strong enough to blow a hole in the valve. Has happened twice in last 2 months. Problem started after taking care to a precision tune and they replaced the part as part of a tune up service. \015\012They are planning on doing a diagnostic on the cat converter to see if there is a blockage causing a pressure build up.\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 23-10-2017

That would be exactly what I would look for... When the catalytic honeycombs become blocked, it causes a build-up of exhaust pressure... and this restriction in the exhaust will also have a very definite effect on engine performance: The typical symptoms are an engine that initially seems to running okay, but slowly loses power.. in severe cases it will lose power to the point the engine stalls and will not restart until the pressure build up bleeds off.

\015\012Good luck with the problem --- it sounds like you are on the right track. And don't forget to rate my advice: your approval is my "paycheck"!

The front cat is bad for cracking apart and falling into the elbow in the pipe below it. Over time the honeycomb erodes from the extremely hot exhaust blowing, not through the comb, but against the side of the broken off piece down in the elbow. Over time the tiny pieces that blow off it clog up the third cat just behind the flex part of the exhaust. You must replace the front cat, or cut it open and clean it out and re weld it shut, and also replace the third cat...or but clean it out too. Bypassing the two cats don't cost a thing and the egr is 50 bucks. It will run like a top. If you only replace the front cat and the egr, the car will not be able to go over 50mph and your new egr will blow.
