Having problems with your 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4WD ?

The suv died while I was driving. Had it towed to a shop. They replaced the alternator as well as the harmonic balancer. Harmonic Balancer was replaced with an aftermarket part due to the fact Japan is not shipping parts. Truck is running very rough. Shop doesnt really know whats wrong with it and suggested a new vehicle. Do not want to lose this truck.

Answers :

Assuming that the alternator was bad, preventing the battery from fully charging and the mechanic got it right. However the replacing the "Harmonic Balancer" makes no sense as the "Balancer" only smooths out the tendency of the engine to vibrate. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex_yJ_V5UH8
As to it running rough check the spark plug wires as these on older cars tend to break the carbon path in the center of the plug wires thus loosing spark to a plug from time to time. Start the engine at night when it is dark and look under the hood at the plug wires to see if you have any arcing. Replacing the plug wires cost a little less than 20 bucks.
