On a 2005 Hyundia Sonata, should the crank shaft pulley feel loose? I recently have gone through 3 steering wheel belts. I assumed the first belt frayed because it was old and brittle. The new belt frayed within a few days. While putting on the 3rd belt, I noticed that the belt was slipping on to the edge of the crank shaft pulley. I loosened the idler and took the belt off. I then noticed that the crankshaft pulley was very loose, like the bearings were gone. Could it be possible that th

Make sure the tensioner is tight,it has a spring in it to move clockwise,do not leave any bolt loose, make sure you are routing the belt where the tension holds the belt on,not other way.\015\012\015\012\015\012Tim ... 1997 Ford Taurus

The crank shaft pulley was out of alignment when i was changing the serpentine belt. when i tried to push it back on a rubber piece came out one side. so i pulled the whole thing off to reset the whole thing and had nothing but problems. Help please.

That rubber piece was probably your front crank seal. I would recommend replacing it now as there could easily be nicks in it and it will puke engine oil all over the place while you drive. A new one should only cost between 10 - 15 dollars. When you ... Chevrolet Malibu

Serpentine noise I just replaced the idler pulley and new serpentine belt on wife’s 96 Grand Voyager. Idler was making a lot of noise (98K on the car). I did this following the instructions below. Now have a louder shrill that coincides with the RPM’s. It sounds if coming from the air condition compressor which has not worked in 3-4 years. 2006 Toyota Corolla LE. Loud squeaking coming from serpentine belt area after I start the engine cold. Changed the belt recently but still noice persist. Loud squeaking goes away after driving for 3-5 mins. I'm thinking it's the belt tensioner pulley or the belt tensioner itself. If it's the pulley, how do it, or is it possible to, replace just the pulley from the belt tensioner. Also how would I be able to get to it as the space is really limited. Thanks!

It is probably the tensioner pulley that's gone bad. It can be replaced separately, if you can purchase the pulley separately. As to how to go about changing it in such a small space, it's definitely possible, with the right type of tools. That's why ... 2006 Toyota Corolla

Idler Pulley I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant 16V I4. The idler pulley (or is it the crankshaft pulley?) that drives the two serpentine belts is loose. I didn't notice it for a while and just thought my belts needed to be replaced because the car would squeak on startup. Finally one day there was a grinding noise, when I checked it out the idler pulley was out towards the plastic encasing under the hood. The serpentine belt on this rodeo continues to fray. it appears that the belt rides to close to the inside (motor side ) of the water pump and cooling fan pulley. The air conditioner has been replaced and works fine. All pulleys seem to be in alignment. With the air conditioner off and a shorter belt on it does the same thing. Is there something I am missing here. The cooling fan pulley does not seem to have any wear either. It seems to idol and run fine then when at a higher rpm it will shred t

The crank shaft pulley came loose. The inside diameter is worn over size and the key way is mangled. The key way on the crank shaft gear that runs the timing belt/crank shaft pulley is also scored and mangled. Does the crank shaft gear that runs the timing belt/crank shaft pulley come off? Also, how do I adjust the tension on the timing belt?

You will need to replace the pulley to insure the pulley will run true. Depending on how bad the crank itself is damaged will determine if you will have to do a total rebuild and replace your crank. And yes, the gear does come off. There is a tens ... 1995 Subaru Legacy
