98 explorer tailgate gap leak

\015 I noticed a gap between the tailgate and body on one side. This was just after incorrectly trying to put a bike rack on the trunk lid. I'm not sure if this was the origin or something else, as the same side was also backed into a while back, hard enough to dent. The gap makes noise on the freeway and water leaks in. I tried to fix by loosening where the hinges meet the lid but just caused the other side to add the same gap, and can't get either back to normal. Any idea exactly how to line that back up?\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 21-08-2017

If the sheet metal is dented enough, no amount of adjusting will solve the problem. The amount of play you can get would require adjusting all 3 points of attachment - not just the hinges. If the latch plate assembly hasn't been adjusted with the hinges - you're only twisting the tailgate between the hinges and latch plate.
You might want to talk with an autobody mechanic and see what he thinks. If he can get it to fit w/o doing filler, and paint - you could save a fair amount of money on the repair.
Good luck!
Unfortunatly you have bent the door and will need to be more than likely replaced to correctly realign the door
