If it makes a chugging noise in reverse, I have the same issue of popping out of reverse. Have 1 broken tooth from a sloppy shift and hence the gears do not mesh as smoothly as possible. Not a big issue, as I just deal with the chugging and hold it in reverse on a slope.
Hi, I had a similar problem on my '96 Passat and discovered that a plastic cover had come loose from the top of the gearchanger mechanism under the bonnet / hood, and it was fouling the mechanism. While you are in there check to see if there is still some grease left on the working parts. If not, add some.
