I have a 2002 Mazda Protege 5. I think that the wheel bearing at the front on the driver's side is going bad. What can I do to test it myself at home without taking it apart. I have heard that when you are driving, if you turn the opposite way (bearing left, turn right) of the bad bearing and it goes quiet, it means it's shot, is this true?

\015\012Most often, bearings will give off a tell-tale grinding noise when in motion. Determining the wheel bearing that is making the noise can be difficult since the noise and vibration travels across the entire axle.\015\ ... 2002 Mazda Protege

Hi, I have a 2003 Mazda Protege. Recently the Alignment was serviced since I noticed that the wheel was shaking anytime I went beyond 65 MPH. Since the Alignment has been fixed, the wheel does not shake as badly as it did before but still vibrating. Is this something i should be concerned about?

If the steering wheel shakes at 45 mph or better probably wheel balancing. Take it back to alignment shop and tell them the problem. If its balancing its approx $5.00 a wheel. ... 2000 Mazda Protege

Mazda Protege 2001 2.0 standard; cat was heating up due to bad coil connector, (3 wire plug at coil), go figure, in any event, car idles irratically and exhaust sputters at idle, has plenty of power though off idle. Sounds like idle air control valve, however no codes are registering. Help!!!!

I have a 2000 Mazda Protege with manual transmission. I live in a very cold area (0 to -15F at night is common). The clutch pedal is extremely slow to spring back and it is quite difficult to shift with the shifter when it is cold. I have been told to check the transmission fluid but am not sure how to do this. Can anyone provide a visual discription of what I would do? Also, any ideas on this being normal behavior in such climates? Thanks!

At 65 mph my Mazda Protege LX, manual transmission, slipped from fifth to third gear, causing the car to spin into the ditch. Driving slowly home, (with me following closely behind) the car slipped from third to second and again from second to first, each time causing the car to swerve badly. He had noticed that it was having a hard time in fifth gear a few days ago, so we have been careful. There was no obvious noises coinciding with each slipping.

It sound like there is a problem with the synchronizers and or the gears them selves. either way you will need to have the trans rebuilt before you can not put it into any gear. ... 1997 Mazda Protege
