Hi - so the deposits were black. If the engine had started and the plugs were still black it would suggest an over-rich mixture, but if it wouldn't start they would probably be black anyway!

\015\012The only sensible way forward is to get a list of fault codes from the onboard diagnostic system and take it from there. You could either go to a VW dealer, or if you are technically minded you
\015\012could buy a £15 interface cable, download some free "VAG diagnostic software" and run it on a portable computer.
\015\012Generally a petrol engine needs fuel, a spark at the right time and some compression in order to run, but with computer controlled engines the timings and mixtures are all set by the computer based on data from the sensors. If any of the sensors or their connectors are defective the computer (ECU) will try to correct the system for a fault which might not be there.
\015\012I'm a bit worried about the use of ether / Easy Start sprays. If you car has a mass air flow meter just after the air filter it could be driven mad by the ether. If you want to try something simple, try disconnecting the mass air flow meter connector and see if it will start without it.

If they do not, please hold off on the rating and add a comment with more details so I can try to
\015\012help you further. Cheers, D
