'87 Fieros had distributorless ignition (i.e. coil packs) on the 2.5L Tech IV 4cyl.
\012
\0122.8L V6's on the other hand still had an electronically controlled dizzy. The firing order for these engines is: 1-2-3-4-5-6. When looking at the engine from the rear of the vehicle, the odd cylinders are closest to you (furthest from the front of the car). The even numbered cylinders are furthest from you (the forward bank of cylinders). Since the engine is mounted transversely (sideways), the 'front' of the engine is actually facing the passenger side of the car. The 'back' of the engine obviously bolts to the transaxle, which occupies the driver's side of the engine bay. Cylinder #1 then becomes the rearmost, pass. side or back, right corner of the engine.
\012
\012The distributor rotates clockwise when viewed from above. Due to the fact that these cars are older and have had so many different 'mechanics' working on them over the years, you can't always assume that the distributor is still clocked properly. You'll need to find the timing marks on the harmonic balancer (crank pulley neck) and get them near 0 degrees BTDC. Remove cyl.#1 spark plug and determine if the cylinder is on it's compression stroke, or the end of exhaust stroke. Note where rotor is pointing inside distributor cap. If cyl. #1 is on compression stroke, then rotor points to #1 position for wires. If cyl #1 is on end of exhaust stroke, then rotor points to #4 position. Once you know one of the wires, by deduction you should be able to put the other 5+coil wire back on.

\012Dizzy rotates clockwise when viewed from above.
\012Firing order: 1-2-3-4-5-6
\012
\012Next time, remove the wires one at a time, or write the #'s on the dist. cap itself.

\012"It's okay to make mistakes, just don't make the same one twice."
The firing order on 99% of 4 cylinder engines is 1,3,4,2. look on the distributor (dist) cap and see if it has any marks like a line or a #1 by on e of the plug wire towers. start with that one and then go in the direction the distributor rotor turns. attach wires one by one in the order 1,3,4,2 . to find the direction of rotation take the cap of the distributor and have a friend crank engine for 10 sec. no1 cylinder is in front of engine, i think it is on the right side on the Fiero, where the belts are. if no markings on the dist. cap remove no1 plug and get ti to the top on the compresion stroke ( both valves closed) and see where the rotor in the dist. ends up that is your no 1. hope this helps.
