Having problems with your 1985 Nissan 300ZX ?

Starting Problem 1. will not start unless starting fluid is sprayed into air intake. Fuel pump, regulator, and fuel filter are new. 2. After starting idles at 1500 rpm. Can not reduce idle speed.

Answers :

I would look at the EGR valve and test whether the diaphram is ruptured. Then if not successful look at any idle speed "motor".

If that is not successful, look at the intake manifold. With the engine running, get a old spray bottle and spray water around the seams of the intake while the engine is running. Any opening will draw in the water and stall the engine or reduce RPM. That is how you find the leak.

The reason your car is idling high is when you open the throttle, more air goes in the engine. If there is an air leak that does not belong there it will raise the idle just like your foot pressing down on the accelerator.

The car is hard to start because the air/fuel mix is flooded with air. You are not getting enough fuel for the volume of air that is entering the engine.
